Tinnitus

Where does Tinnitus come from?

Tinnitus, characterised by persistent ringing or buzzing sounds in the ears, can appear in different ways:

  • Exposure to Loud Noise: Prolonged exposure to loud noise can damage inner ear hair cells, leading to tinnitus.
  • Ageing: Age-related hearing deterioration may contribute to it.
  • Earwax Blockage: Build-up of earwax can exert pressure on the eardrum or obstruct sound, resulting in you experiencing it.
  • Ear Infections: Infections like otitis media can induce it.
  • Medications: Certain medications, such as antibiotics and antidepressants, can trigger it as a side effect.
  • Head and Neck Injuries: Trauma to the head or neck can harm the inner ear or auditory nerve, also causing it.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions like high blood pressure or thyroid disorders may also lead to it.

Within the inner ear, inner and outer hair cells transmit sounds to the brain for processing. Outer hair cells, more exposed and vulnerable, can sustain damage, allowing unprompted sound signals to reach inner hair cells and the brain, resulting in you hearing the non-existent sound.

Effects:

  • Hearing Loss: It is often linked with varying degrees of hearing loss, from mild to severe.
  • Dizziness or Vertigo: Some individuals with the condition may experience dizziness or vertigo, associated with inner ear issues.
  • Headaches: It can be accompanied by headaches or migraines in some cases.
  • Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep due to it can lead to fatigue and other health issues.
  • Anxiety and Depression: It can also cause stress and anxiety, leading to depression in some individuals.
